Fighting for Tax Fairness: Real Property Tax Process Reforms

As you may know, The State Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT) appraises each homeowner’s property in Maryland every three years. Before recently passed legislation, property owners who wished to appeal an assessment had to do so within 45 days, yet I had heard from many of you that some of your appeals were taking 18 months or more. After working with constituents to draft and sponsor HB 592, Real Property Tax Assessment Appeals Process, the process of appealing property tax assessments will be streamlined as appeals must be heard within 120 days of a new assessment and findings on that appeal will be issued no more than 60 days later.

My fight for tax fairness in Maryland is ongoing. Reforming broken and unjust systems, as well as continuing to champion legislation that serves the many working families of the state is my priority as your elected official. If you’re looking for a partner in resolving issues related to taxes, please contact my office, and I would be happy to see what we can do together.
